Are We Still Playing by Outdated Rules?

Our recent Green Flag event, hosted by Google, challenged the way we think about capital. Are we still using the old metrics that reward speed and size - and leaving real opportunity on the table?

Traditional measures like growth rate, scale and exit velocity might look impressive on paper, but they don’t capture how women-led ventures grow: sustainably, strategically and profitably. When we judge them by these outdated rules, we undervalue leadership, resilience and the kind of impact that drives real business success.

Are We Measuring the Wrong Things?

Current investment metrics favour rapid scaling and high burn, creating a bias that disadvantages women-led ventures. These businesses often prioritise customer retention, operational strength and sustainable growth. Ignoring these strengths strips portfolios of balance and misses out on untapped potential. One attendee highlighted the value of gathering with intelligent, informed and impactful women - a reminder that value isn’t only financial. Networks, insight and perspective matter as much as speed and scale.

Women-led ventures create measurable growth, resilient teams and lasting business impact - outcomes often invisible to traditional male-focused metrics.

A New Lens on Value

Green Flag Certification provides a framework for redesigning capital. Instead of relying on traditional metrics that favour a narrow archetype of success, Green Flag focuses on measures that capture how women actually lead, build and create impact:

  • Customer retention and unit economics, reflecting sustainable growth
  • Operational support and coaching, recognising that capital alone isn’t enough
  • Governance structures that give diverse leadership real decision-making power
  • Transparent reporting, tied to outcomes rather than promises
  • A long-term perspective, valuing resilience over rapid exits

These criteria uncover the pathways to ROI, strengthen portfolio construction and illuminate the foundations of robust business performance.

Evidence that Women-Led Ventures Outperform

A recent US study by the Female Founders Fund (2025) shows that women entrepreneurs generate 78 cents of revenue for every dollar raised, compared to just 31 cents for male-founded startups - and they burn less capital along the way. Yet, they still receive a disproportionately small share of funding.

While this data comes from the US, it highlights a global truth: traditional metrics often miss the value women bring, highlighting the need for new ways to fund women-led ventures. Investors who adopt this approach uncover undervalued opportunities, reduce portfolio risk and capture smarter returns. (Inc.com summary)

Other research confirms this trend:

  • A Boston Consulting Group study found women-led startups deliver more than twice the revenue per dollar invested than male-led ventures.
  • McKinsey shows companies with diverse leadership teams are 33% more likely to outperform peers on profitability.
  • In the UK, 89% of female entrepreneurs and SME owners are planning major business moves in 2025, from expanding domestically to reaching new customers (Startup Magazine). Yet despite this bold ambition, female-led startups captured only 2% of total UK venture capital funding in 2024 (Financial Times) leaving a vast pool of untapped potential on the table.

Globally women-led ventures still receive less than 3% of VC funding. Over the past 30 years, all-female founders’ share of VC funding has averaged 2.4% and nearly three-quarters of U.S. VC firms do not have a single female investing partner. (Harvard Kennedy School)

Rethinking the Rules of Success

Speed, scale and exit velocity capture only one part of the picture. Alternative metrics give investors a richer understanding of performance - including leadership, operational strength and sustainable growth.

Green Flag equips investors with practical tools, training and frameworks to recognise and act on this potential, unlocking opportunities that continue to deliver well into the future.

Measuring What Really Matters

Success isn’t just about growth - it’s about leaders who create meaningful change, teams that thrive and strategies that deliver tangible results. For investors, these are the metrics that reveal real opportunity and ensure that capital is channelled toward ventures that deliver lasting value.

The Rewrite Starts Now

The question is simple: will your fund cling to the old playbook, or embrace capital redesign that uncovers hidden value, empowers leadership and unlocks untapped opportunities?

Every investment decision sends a signal about what we value. Green Flag Certification ensures that signal represents one of strength, equity and lasting impact.

The rules are changing. The opportunity is clear. The choice is yours - will you be part of the rewrite?
