Why Women Founders Flinch After Naming the Price

Oct 14, 2026

You can do the work. That was never in question.

You can run the room, solve the problem and deliver something better than the person they might have paid three times as much to provide.

Then you reach the moment that decides whether any of it becomes revenue.

The ask.

"Shall we go ahead?"

"The fee is £5,000."

The moment when you say the number and have to sit in the silence while they decide.

Except you don't sit in it.

You fill it.

You explain. Soften. Add a caveat. Offer a discount nobody asked for. Say, "Obviously, we can be flexible," before they have said a word.

You would rather give away money than sit inside three seconds of not knowing.

What is happening

The polite name is "not wanting to be pushy."

But often it is an appeasing response: making the other person comfortable before they have asked you to. Some people call this the fawn response: the reflex to reduce tension by accommodating the person in front of you.

Women are taught early to smooth the room, keep people comfortable and avoid appearing difficult. Naming a price and waiting can feel like breaking every one of those rules at once.

So you rescue the buyer from discomfort by discounting yourself out of it.

The close is not you taking something from them. It is you respecting your work enough to let it cost what it costs, and giving them room to make an adult decision.

The Price, Pause, Calm rule

Price: State the fee cleanly. "The investment is £5,000."

Pause: Stop. Breathe once. Let the buyer respond.

Calm: Stay calm and add nothing. Do not hand them a single reason to doubt the number. If they need clarity, answer the real question, not the rejection you imagined.

That silence is not yours to fill.

Do not count to ten theatrically. Do not stare them down. Simply stop adding reasons for them to doubt the number.

The discomfort is not proof that you have done something wrong. It is the muscle you were rarely invited to build. And muscles are built through reps, not affirmations.

⭐ Save this before your next pricing call.

Inside Bootstrappers Business Academy, founders practise the actual moment: naming the price, holding their composure and responding to what the buyer really says, not to the rejection they imagined in advance.

You are not too much when you ask to be paid. Come and practise the ask.

Name the price. Then stop making the case against yourself.
