Holding the Line
Oct 21, 2026
“That’s a bit more than we were hoping to spend.”
And just like that, before they have made an argument or requested a discount, you have already dropped the price in your head.
Now you are simply working out how to say the smaller number without looking as if you caved.
They didn’t negotiate you down.
You negotiated yourself down the moment their face changed.
Here is the part nobody teaches you:
Negotiation is not the moment when you fight.
It is the moment when you hold a number you already decided was fair while the other person tests what is possible.
And sometimes you fold not because their commercial case is good, but because the discomfort of pushback feels louder than the value of the money.
Why this is not simply confidence
Women can face a real social penalty for assertiveness. That does not mean every buyer is biased or every woman negotiates the same way.
It does mean the fear of being seen as difficult did not come from nowhere.
The answer is not to pretend that pressure does not exist.
The answer is to remove the most important decisions from the pressure of the room.
Set the line before the room
-
Target: The price you are asking for.
-
Floor: The lowest price at which the work remains commercially worthwhile.
-
Trade: What must change if the price changes. Scope, speed, access, payment terms or deliverables.
Write all three down while you are calm.
Then make yourself one promise:
You may say yes in the room. You may say no. But you may not renegotiate against yourself while they watch.
If they ask for a lower price, do not simply concede. Trade.
“We can reach that budget by reducing the scope to X.”
“I can offer that rate if payment is made in full upfront.”
“At that fee, the delivery date would move to next month.”
A concession without a trade teaches the buyer that your original price was not real.
A trade protects both the economics and the dignity of the conversation.
â Save this before your next negotiation.
That is what gets drilled inside Bootstrappers Business Academy: setting the floor, answering the objection and holding the line long enough to discover whether there is a real deal to make.
The reason for your floor did not change because their face did. Come and practise holding it.
