Courage Isn’t Competence

Nov 04, 2026

“Just go for it.”

I want to talk about the worst good advice in business.

Someone tells you to be more confident. Back yourself. Feel the fear and do it anyway.

So you walk into the pitch, negotiation or sales call with your chin up, repeating that you’ve got this.

Then the real pressure arrives and the feeling drains straight out of you.

And once again you decide you were not confident enough.

Here is what nobody explained:

Courage gets you into the room. Competence tells you what to do once you are there.

They are not the same thing.

Courage can make you attempt the close.

Practice teaches you what to say when the buyer hesitates.

Courage can make you state the price.

Practice teaches you to stop talking afterwards.

Courage can make you negotiate.

Practice teaches you what to trade and where your floor sits.

Confidence is evidence

The most useful confidence is not a mood.

It is evidence your body remembers.

You have handled this objection before.

You have heard “no” and survived it.

You have tried the sentence, reviewed what happened and tried it again.

That is why telling a woman to “believe in herself” can become a set-up when nobody gives her the chance to practise the skill.

The problem is not always in her head.

Sometimes it is in her calendar: no rehearsal, no feedback and no repetition.

Rehearse, Review, Repeat

Rehearse: Practise one real conversation with realistic resistance.

Review: Identify the exact moment you rushed, softened or lost the thread.

Repeat: Run that moment again until the better response becomes available under pressure.

Stop waiting to feel ready.

Choose the business moment you avoid most (the close, the price, the negotiation, the difficult client) and drill it until it becomes boring.

Boring is not failure.

Boring is what competence feels like when your nervous system no longer treats the moment as an emergency.

⭐ Save the Rehearse, Review, Repeat loop and pick your first rep.

That is what Bootstrappers Business Academy is for: not another workshop asking women to believe harder, but a place to do the difficult thing badly, safely and repeatedly until confidence has somewhere real to stand.

You were never lacking courage. You were lacking practice, and then blamed for the gap. Come and get the reps.
