Borrowed Scar Tissue

Oct 28, 2026

“I’d always prefer to learn lessons from someone else rather than make mistakes myself.”

A founder said that after our Cambridge Breakfast, and I haven’t stopped thinking about it.

Obvious, isn’t it?

And yet almost nobody gets to build that way.

You make the bad hire alone.

You sign the contract because the fee feels too small to justify a lawyer.

You keep the wrong client for two years.

You leave your prices flat while your costs climb.

Every mistake costs money and months.

And almost every one has already happened to a woman you could have had coffee with.

The isolation tax

That is the hidden tax on building in isolation.

Not only that it is lonely.

You pay full retail for lessons other founders might have given you for the price of a conversation.

There is nothing noble about learning everything the hard way.

The hard way is not more authentic. It is simply more expensive.

Founders who appear to move quickly do not necessarily avoid mistakes.

Often, somebody reaches across the table and says, “Don’t. I did that. Here’s what it cost me,” before the mistake becomes theirs.

Historically, much of that information has travelled through informal networks: the warm introduction, the private dinner, the quiet word after the meeting.

Women have not always had equal access to the most commercially useful rooms. And the quality of your connections matters more than the number of them.

The scar-tissue check

Before a decision big enough to hurt (a hire, contract, pivot, price change or partnership) do not make it in the dark.

Find one founder who has already made that move and ask three questions:

What did you fail to notice before you decided?

What did the mistake cost in money, time or attention?

What would you do differently if the decision were mine today?

Ten minutes of borrowed scar tissue can save a year of your own.

Peer advice is not automatically useful. It matters who the peer is and whether her operating habits match the outcome you need.

⭐ Save the three scar-tissue questions before your next big decision.

That is the point of the Bootstrappers’ Breakfasts™: a room built so the lesson can cross the table before you pay for it yourself.

Stop paying full price for lessons other women are already willing to share. Take the shortcut you were never offered.
